FORT MYERS — Sun Country Airlines says stronger-than-anticipated demand means it will inaugurate two flights a week from Fort Myers to Puerto Rico instead of one.

The discount airline had originally planned to begin nonstop service from Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers on May 3 with one weekly flight to San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico.

The two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays will be the first time there is direct service between Fort Myers and Puerto Rico. The Lee County Port Authority says the additional service is in response to passenger demand.

“I am extremely pleased Sun Country Airlines has decided to increase service to San Juan, Puerto Rico,” says Robert Ball, executive director of the Lee County Port Authority, in a statement. “By offering two weekly flights from the beginning, people will have more flexibility in making their travel plans between Southwest Florida and Puerto Rico.”
