Prison time for former exec in $800K fraud

David Brooks, former accounting manager at Coastal Orthopedics and Sports Medicine of Southwest Florida in Bradenton, was sentenced to four years in federal prison for defrauding the practice out of nearly $800,000.

As part of his sentence, Brooks entered a money judgment in the amount of $792,851, according to a statement. Additionally, the court ordered the four-year sentence to be served consecutive to a seven-year state sentence in Ohio Brooks is serving for violation of probation.

Coastal Orthopedics hired Brooks in October 2011, the statement from the U.S. Attorney's office says. In June 2013, the company discovered Brooks was convicted of theft, money laundering and other fraud-related offenses in Ohio. Brooks was fired and Coastal Orthopedics commenced a review of its books and records.

Coastal discovered Brooks used company accounts to purchase more than $700,000 in American Express gift cards between January 2012 and June 19, 2013, the statement says. He used the cards for personal expenses, including hotel stays, a Jeep Liberty and legal fees for his Ohio criminal case. Coastal suffered a total loss of $792,851.
