LARGO — The Tampa Bay Innovation Center, which helps spur innovation and entrepreneurship in the technology sector, plans to open a new incubator in St. Petersburg, named TEC Garage.

According to a statement, the center hopes to launch TEC Garage, which stands for Technology and Entrepreneurship Center, in August.

The incubator will house 15 to 30 startups in 6,200 square feet on the first floor of the St. Petersburg College Downtown Center. TEC Garage will host businesses in a mix of sectors, including science, technology, engineering, arts and digital media. The center will rent out office and coworking space and provide resources such as mentors, coaches, education and networking to help the startups.

The center says it already has three signed tenants for the TEC Garage: Toonari Media, Dock-n-Lock and My OnCall Doc.

“This area is a growing hub for entrepreneurship and St. Petersburg College's Downtown Center is a great location for a business incubator,” says Tonya Elmore, president of Tampa Bay Innovation Center. “We want to give our local entrepreneurs every resource and tool they need to thrive, and believe this program will help create and keep jobs right here in our community.”

The center says the location at the college will house TEC Garage for several years, but it eventually wants to find permanent space in downtown St. Pete for a large incubator to serve biotech and other technology startups.
