ESTERO — The fast-growing unincorporated area of Estero in South Lee County may become a municipality before year's end.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed legislation that lets voters in South Lee County decide whether to incorporate as the Village of Estero. The issue will be on the election ballot on Nov. 4.

Estero is one of the fastest-growing areas of the Gulf Coast. Along with its neighbor, the City of Bonita Springs, Estero is located halfway between Naples and Fort Myers.

Because of the availability of land, proximity to Southwest Florida International Airport, Florida Gulf Coast University and two regional malls, the area has been the subject of intense development speculation. Hertz is currently building a new corporate headquarters building there that will house 700 employees, many of them relocating from New Jersey.

You can read a recent story about Estero's development opportunities and challenges in the Business Observer.
