In the American culinary universe, there's New York City — and then there's the rest of the world.

So it's an accomplishment when a Fort Myers restaurant makes any New Yorker's list of best places to eat. And it's doubly impressive when it's a doughnut shop.

Bennett's Fresh Roast, famous for exotic doughnuts such as maple bacon, made a list of “amazing doughnut shops with serious street cred” on New York Magazine's restaurant blog Grub Street. In fact, Bennett's was just one of three Florida doughnut shops featured in the list.

Besides a downtown Fort Myers location that opened in 2008, Bennett's recently opened a second location on Sanibel Island.

Bennett's in Fort Myers makes and sells 15,000 doughnuts a month. But bakers better start early if New Yorkers come calling. New York City has 8 million residents.
