TAMPA — WellCare Health Plans Inc. promoted Kenneth Burdick to president and chief operating officer.

Burdick joined the Tampa-based managed care health services firm Jan. 27 as president of national health plans. Burdick's responsibilities, according to a release, have been expanded to include operations and clinical services.

Mike Polen, senior vice president of operations at WellCare, and Dr. Steve Goldberg, senior vice president and chief medical officer, will now both report to Burdick. Burdick will continue to report to Chairman and CEO Dave Gallitano.

As part of the promotion Burdick's base salary was increased from $550,000 to $625,000, along with his long-term stock awards based on performance goals.

“In a short period of time, Ken has improved operating disciplines and strengthened the consistency of our performance in many areas,” Gallitano says in the press release. “By aligning operations and clinical services with our regional and state leadership, we expect to achieve an even greater level of collaboration and performance in serving our government customers, members and providers.”

WellCare Health Plans provides managed care health services targeted to government-sponsored health care programs, such as Medicaid and Medicare.
