PUNTA GORDA — More than 53,000 passengers passed through the Punta Gorda Airport in November, a 36% increase over the same month one year ago.

The airport's sole carrier, discount airline Allegiant Air, has boosted the number of flights and destinations from the airport in Charlotte County. For example, it recently announced nonstop jet service to Indianapolis and Pittsburgh starting in February.

Allegiant is projecting it will carry about 635,000 passengers this year to and from 21 destinations from Punta Gorda. The airline specializes in flying to tourism destinations from smaller airports in the Northeast and Midwest, such as Allentown, Pa., and Toledo, Ohio.

The Punta Gorda airport is expanding its terminal building and officials have said the airport could reach 1 million passengers annually as early as next year. That could put it on par with passenger traffic at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.
