TAMPA — The U.S. Attorney's office for the Middle District of Florida had its best fiscal year ever in 2014, with more than $367 million collected by the office's civil, criminal and asset forfeiture divisions.

The district is based in Tampa and covers the entire Gulf Coast. “Recovering monies from convicted criminals and others who have defrauded the government is critical in enforcing our nation's laws,” U.S. Attorney Lee Bentley says in a press release. “Working in partnership with our law enforcement partners, and other federal, state and local agencies, our efforts ensure that criminals and others committing fraud are held fully accountable for their offenses.”

The civil division recovered $152.95 million in affirmative civil fraud cases in fiscal 2014, most alleging health care fraud, the release states. The criminal division, the release states, recovered another $19.7 million, mostly from criminal fines, special assessments and restitution. The office's forfeiture division collected more than $195 million in criminal and civil forfeitures, an all-time division high, the release states.
