The Shula family is jumping into the burger business.

Dave Shula, son of legendary football coach Don Shula, says he's looking for franchisees to develop Shula Burger restaurants on the Gulf Coast, from Tampa to Naples.

Dave Shula, who has his own football record as an NFL player and coach, recently opened the fourth Shula Burger on the east coast of Florida in Delray. Father and son run the upscale Shula steakhouses.

Shula says he's undeterred by the competition in upscale burger restaurants. “When we got into steakhouses in 1989 there were lots of good steakhouses, too,” he notes. “The reputation we've built in the full-service category has helped us enter the fast-casual market.”

Shula says he's looking for seasoned operators to open three to six Shula Burger restaurants in an area over a period of about five to seven years. Shula's franchise charges $35,000 for each unit, plus 5% royalties.
