NAPLES — Health Management Associates, the Naples-based company that owns and operates 71 hospitals, says it plans to lease Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala.

HMA says it plans to execute an agreement for a long-term lease of the 421-bed hospital in Ocala in the fourth quarter. In addition, Munroe Regional will establish an affiliation with HMA's statewide clinical partner, University of Florida Health Shands Hospital.

“By combining the talents of Munroe Regional, the resources of Health Management and the academic strength of UF Health Shands Hospital, the partnership will provide the region the best opportunity to strengthen and improve the health of the community for years to come,” says Alan Levine, senior vice president and Florida group president for HMA, in a statement.

Under the lease agreement, HMA will keep Munroe Regional's existing charity care policy, and the hospital will operate under the guidance of a local board of trustees consisting of physicians and local community leaders. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We've had a longstanding relationship with Munroe Regional and are excited about the opportunity to strengthen that relationship in partnership with Health Management,” says Timothy Goldfarb, CEO of Shands HealthCare, in the statement.
