TAMPA — Lee Bentley officially became the acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida after Robert E. O'Neill left the post Monday.

Bentley was “Bobby” O'Neill's first assistant, and he has been the assistant U.S. attorney for the middle district since 2000. Prior to that, he worked at Hogan & Hartson, a Washington, D.C., law firm. He also has experience as a special assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida and as an attorney-adviser in the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

O'Neill announced his resignation from the job in April. He is leaving to take a job with Freeh Group International Solutions LLC, a global risk-management firm based in Wilmington, Del.

O'Neill has been the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida since Oct. 5, 2010. He also served in the post from 2007 to 2008.
