Farm land, hotel, luxury homes go to auction

TAMPA — Acres of farm land in Hillsborough, Manatee and Polk counties, packing houses, the Red Rose Hotel in Plant City, luxury condos in Naples and home sites are among the numerous assets of the Madonia Family that are up for auction as part of the family's bankruptcy reorganization.

Auctioneers have solicited sealed bids, which are being evaluated by Chapter 11 bankruptcy trustee Gerard A. McHale Jr., and may be used as opening bids for the upcoming auctions.

The Madonia Family cited two years of freezes on its Florida farms,, a hurricane on its Virginia farm in 2011 and challenges from cheap imports in seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.'¨
The trustee expects to receive court permission to hold the following auctions:

Aug. 15, 10 a.m. — About 7,367 acres of Florida farm and development land in Martin, HIllsborough, Polk and Manatee counties; two packing houses; a former Bible college, and several labor camps.

Aug. 15, 10 a.m. — Thirty-one properties totaling 3,228 acres; produce packing houses; labor camps, and several homes in Accomack and Northampton counties in Virginia.

Aug. 21, 9 a.m. — Agricultural equipment, Stuart.

Aug. 22, 4 p.m.  — Red Rose Hotel in Plant City, plus a home in Lakeland, home sites on Walden Lake in Plant City, and other Florida assets.

Aug. 23, 9 a.m. — Agricultural equipment, Mulberry.

Aug. 27, 10 a.m. — Home surrounded by water on Marsh Island just outside Chincoteague, Va.

Aug. 27, 5 p.m. -- Cape Charles, Va.-area properties, including two luxury homes in Bay Creek, plantation-style home, colonial style house just south of Painter, home just west of Oyster.

Aug. 27 - Ending online bid date for land on Lake Erie, a 277,000-square-foot cold storage facility in Ranson, W.Va., and a former cold storage facility and packing house in Winchester, Va.

Aug. 28 and 29 -- A series of live and online farm equipment auctions of Virginia-based equipment.

Dates are not yet set for the auction of luxury condominiums in Naples and Stuart.

The auctions are being overseen by Murray Wise Associates LLC, headquartered in Champaign, Ill., and Crosby and Associates, Inc., based in Winter Haven.
