TAMPA — The Tampa Tribune's new owners, the Tampa Media Group, are displaying a journalistic fighting spirit with Sunday's inaugural issue of The St. Petersburg Tribune, a Pinellas County edition of the newspaper.

The new edition will publish daily, and will have its own staff of editors, reporters and photographers in Pinellas County, according to the Tribune.

"This more clearly demonstrates our belief that every town and local community deserves to have its own focused news coverage and voice," says Publisher William Barker in a report published by the Tribune.

Publication of the new edition indicates that the Tribune is ready to compete with rival Tampa Bay Times for both readers and advertising dollars, according to the Tribune. The report says the Tribune takes a more moderate to conservative approach in its coverage than the Times.

The Pinellas County edition isn't the only change the media group is making. The Tribune plans to publish a “Neighbors” section in three areas of Hillsborough County, beginning later in January, according to the report on TBO.com.
