\SANIBEL — Bennett's Fresh Roast, a popular cafe in downtown Fort Myers, plans to open a second location on Sanibel, a barrier island in Lee County.

Bennett's is known for its unusual fresh-roasted coffees and homemade doughnuts as well as its catchy promotions. Bob Grissinger, a former disc jockey, opened the popular destination in February 2008 and it has become an institution in downtown Fort Myers.

In November, Bennett's celebrated the sale of its millionth doughnut by giving the lucky buyer free coffee and doughnuts for life.

The second location on Sanibel will be located near the bridge to the mainland at 1020 Periwinkle Way, the main thoroughfare on the island. The store will be inside a 2,700-square-foot former real estate building that is undergoing renovations.

“We opened in February 2008 at the beginning of the country's worst economic downturn in 70 years,” says Grissinger, in a statement. “It's so gratifying to know that we've come so far in such a short period of time.”
