LAKELAND — Indianapolis-based Caito Foods Service plans to open its first Florida warehouse for expansion in the Sunshine State.

The company paid $1.8 million for a 39,000-square-foot cold storage warehouse in Lakeland — considered a central distribution point for Florida.

Caito Foods, which serves 28 states from its existing distribution centers in Indianapolis, Ohio and Tennessee, plans to begin operations at the facility in the fourth quarter, says Matthew Caito, the company's chief administrative officer.

Caito Foods has existing customers in Florida, including Wal-Mart, Dollar General and Trader Joe's, Caito says. It has new accounts starting next year.

“This puts us a lot closer to our customers,” Caito says.

The company's brands include Garden Highway and FreshLine.

The warehouse at 5300 Great Oak Drive in Lakeland Regional Industrial Park previously sold for $2.4 million in September 2010, according to Polk County property records.

Colliers International brokers Ed Miller and Dee Seymour represented the seller, TBI Properties Florida.
