FORT MYERS — Medical distributor LeeSar opened a $40 million distribution facility that will allow it to expand its operations throughout the Southeast.

Lee Memorial Health System and Sarasota Memorial Health System formed LeeSar to buy and distribute medical supplies to hospitals and other medical facilities. LeeSar distributes medical devices, repackaged pharmaceuticals and sterilized surgical equipment. It also prepares food and repairs surgical instruments for area hospitals and other health care organizations.

The nonprofit cooperative held a grand opening for the new facility on Winkler Avenue in Fort Myers on Thursday. The new facility is three times larger than LeeSar's previous warehouse in Lehigh Acres.

“In the national debate over how to make U.S. healthcare more efficient and cost effective, supply and non-care operational costs are often overlooked despite the fact that supply costs are the second-leading cost following labor in health care,” says Robert Simpson, president and CEO of LeeSar, in a statement.

Besides Lee Memorial and Sarasota Memorial, LeeSar also supplies Central Florida Health Alliance in Leesburg and Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Ala.
