NAPLES — Collier County commissioners agreed to establish an economic development office to replace the public-private organization that was dissolved last year.
The board of directors of the Economic Development Council of Collier County voted to dissolve the organization last year after a strategic plan recommended that county government take over the functions of business retention and recruitment.
Established in 1976, the Collier EDC was a nonprofit partnership between businesses and the county, and it received taxpayer funding. However, it became embroiled in political controversy after failed attempts to attract Jackson Laboratory to the area. The new Collier County economic development arm will be called the Collier County Government Office of Business and Economic Development.
