FORT MYERS — Florida Gov. Rick Scott has appointed former Fort Myers police chief Larry Hart as Lee County Tax Collector.

Hart has served as assistant tax collector since 2001 and fills the vacancy created by the death of the previous tax collector, Catherine Curtis. Hart is the retired Fort Myers chief of police.

Since 2001, Hart also served on the board of trustees of Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. He plans to resign from that post to serve as tax collector.

In addition, Hart serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations in Fort Myers, including Southwest Florida Addiction Services and Hope Hospice.
