TAMPA — The Tampa Port Authority signed an agreement Thursday to purchase 110 acres from South Bay Corp. and Industrial Park Inc. for $8.9 million.
The land is adjacent to the Port Redwing facilities in south Hillsborough County. The purchase will allow the port to extend direct rail connections to Port Redwing.
According to a release, the port authority plans to develop the land for cargo terminals and distribution and cargo-generating industrial manufacturing facilities.
“Land is one of our strengths as a port, and we are indeed unique, as we are able to grow in size as well as in our diverse portfolio,” Richard Wainio, port director and chief executive, says in a release.
The Port of Tampa is Florida's largest port. It serves a variety of uses, from a major cruise home port to a shipbuilding and repair center. According to a release, it generates nearly 100,000 jobs and $8 billion in annual economic impact.
