FORT MYERS — An anonymous donor has pledged to match $20 million in fundraising for a new children's hospital in Fort Myers, according to Lee Memorial Health System Foundation.
The hospital foundation says it has until May 16, 2014, to raise the matching funds to build The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. The foundation is seeking to raise $125 million and has already raised about one third of that amount in pledges and gifts.
The hospital's plans include 136 beds in a 292,000-square-foot, five-story building at HealthPark Medical Center off Bass Road near the intersection of Summerlin Road in Fort Myers. Officials estimate the total cost of the project will be $191 million.
Foundation officials started planning for the children's hospital in November 2010. They say the current children's 98-bed hospital within the HealthPark complex is often filled to capacity.
