FORT MYERS — The federal government approved Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) for flights to Cuba this week.

The Fort Myers airport was one of 12 new additions to the nation's approved list. Previously, just three airports — LAX, Miami International, and JFK in New York — had been approved.

A statement from Robert Ball, executive director of the Lee County Port Authority, anticipated future changes to the U.S.'s relationship with Cuba.

“This authority will give the airport an opportunity to develop relationships with approved aircraft operators and prepare for the future when flights to Cuba are completely normalized,” Ball says.

Southwest Florida International Airport served more than 7.5 million passengers in 2010, and is one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic.
