Borders Group Inc., the national mega-bookstore operator, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today. The company will close roughly 30% of its stores in the next several weeks, including 16 in Florida.

Seven of those Florida stores are located within the Gulf Coast Business Review's coverage area. The addresses for those soon-to-be-closed stores are:

• in Brandon, at 2020 Town Center Blvd.;
• in Clearwater, at 2683 Gulf to Bay Blvd.;
• in Fort Myers, within the Gulf Coast Town Center;
• in Naples, at 10600 Tamiami Trail N., Ste. 600;
• in Sarasota, at 3800 Tamiami Trail S.;
• in Tampa, at 909 Dale Mabry Hwy.;
• and in Tampa at 12500 N. Dale Mabry Hwy.

Only one Gulf Coast-area Borders bookstore will remain open: the Borders at the Tyrone Square Mall, in St. Petersburg.

Together, the company's Gulf Coast closings will put 165,388 square feet of commercial real estate back on the local market.
