ST. PETERSBURG — Humana Cares, a division of Humana Inc. based in St. Petersburg, is set to hire 177 new employees, and add 20,000 square feet of office space.

By the end of this summer, Humana Cares will employ nearly 1,000 associates in the Tampa Bay area, the company says in a release. The 20,000 square feet of space it is looking to add will bring its total square footage to 60,000.

Humana Cares is looking for registered nurses, social workers, health educators, dieticians and administrative staff to fill its newest positions. New hires will help the company with its core focus, which is providing managed care to chronically ill members of its health plans.

Humana Cares opened its doors in Tampa Bay in 2009, starting with 200 associates. The parent company, Humana Inc., is headquartered in Louisville, Ky. It earned $34 billion in revenues in 2010.
