Howard Finch, one of the leading academics at the Lutgert School of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University, is leaving to become dean of the Brock School of Management at Samford University, the largest privately funded university in Alabama.

Finch, who has taught at FGCU since 2000, plans to leave in late June and start his new position July 1. He currently is the Alico Chair of Financial Management and Planning and has served as associate dean of the Lutgert School of Business and department chair in economics and finance at FGCU.

While Finch says he's not unhappy at FGCU, he didn't apply for the dean's position at FGCU's business school when it became available recently, preferring instead to accept the Samford position after that university recruited him. “Personally, I felt like it would be good to get a fresh start,” Finch says. Besides, the decision was made easier by the fact that Finch, a graduate of the University of Alabama, will be closer to family in nearby Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi.

Finch has been active outside the university with Junior Achievement, the Real Estate Investment Society, the CFA Society of Naples and Gulf Citrus Growers Association.

FGCU recently scrapped its search for a new business school dean because the candidate it selected turned down the job. There were 61 applicants for the job, but none was internal. The previous dean, Richard Pegnetter, has retired.
