Humana Cares, a division of health care giant Humana Inc. (symbol: HUM), will add 270 new employees to its St. Petersburg operation by the end of the year, putting its total employment there at 780.

That amount is more than three times the number of employees it opened with in February 2009, which was roughly 250.

Humana Cares will launch a new program in January 2011, called Humana Cares Chronic Condition Management. The 270 new hires would help serve 60,000 Humana customers from across the country. The expansion will add to Humana Cares' core competency of serving members of Medicare and Medicaid.

Revenues for Louisville, Ky.-based Humana Inc. nearly reached $31 billion in 2009.
