Mike's Pies Inc. has built its own legend for making award-winning “killer” key lime pie and other popular choices, available in Gulf Coast restaurants and supermarkets. Now the Tampa-based firm is in a position to significantly ramp up its capacity.

Owner Mike Martin recently signed a 10-year lease for 29,400 square feet at Eagle Creek Business Center, a warehouse complex along West Waters Avenue near the Veterans Expressway and Tampa International Airport. He will move his 30-employee operation in December from its current location at 8420 Sunstate St.

“We're kind of stepping over each other here,” Martin tells Coffee Talk. “We had to move in a hurry. The new space will allow us to operate more efficiently.”

Not only that, but the Eagle Creek space, owned by Duke Realty Corp., will allow Mike's Pies to quadruple its production capacity from around 250,000 pies annually to nearly a million.

“It gives us the ability to go after the bigger fish,” says Martin, noting that he would like to be able to offer his desserts to customers of national restaurant chains. He has spent a lot of time lately attending trade shows to promote Mike's Pies on a broader scale.

Thanks to the Internet, fans of Mike's Pies can order them no matter where they may have a craving. The company's website has offered online sales for the last six years, with delivery by way of FedEx, though Martin says most of his pies are still sold locally.
