Sarasota County accepted a build-out vision for the 420-acre Fruitville Initiative, a property east of Interstate 75 and north and south of Fruitville Road.

Sarasota County commissioners approved the changes to the comprehensive plan after years of discussions over appropriate development for the area.

The land currently is designated in the future land use map for a major employment center and moderate density residential. The amendment approved by commissioners designates the 420 acres, owned by the county and five property owners, for special growth and form-based rules designed to increase the likelihood of a pedestrian-oriented development. The amendment also contains provisions requiring compatibility between the homes, businesses and stores.

The county and property owners met with existing neighborhood residents and other interested citizens to revise the comprehensive plan change through a series of six meetings over the summer.
