Lee County government buys land for stadium

BUYER: Lee County, Fort Myers


SELLER: Waterman-Pinnacle


PROPERTY: 11581 Daniels Parkway and a portion of Airside Loop Road, Fort Myers


PRICE: $20 million


LAW FIRM ON DEED: Henderson Franklin Starnes & Holt PA, Fort Myers


PLANS, DESCRIPTION: Lee County purchased two parcels totaling 125 acres for $20 million.


The price equated to $160,000 per acre. The land is on Daniels Parkway, east of Interstate 75.


The property is designated for a spring training baseball stadium for the Boston Red Sox. The $55 million project will feature a main stadium building, parking lots and practice fields.


“We are still working out some of the smaller details,” says Lee County Sports Authority Executive Director Jeff Mielke. “We have the basic concept.”


The project is scheduled to start in late July or August. Completion is expected by early next year.


Kraft Construction is the lead contractor on the project. Architecture firm Populous and Fort Myers-based Parker/ Mudgett/ Smith Architects Inc. are working together to design the stadium.
