Airport passenger traffic are the tea leaves of the tourism business and February was a bad month. Passenger traffic at Tampa International Airport was down 6.7% in February compared with the same month in 2009. Traffic also was down 6.8% at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers and off 4.1% at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport during the same period.

But comparisons were difficult in February because of several factors. Tampa hosted the Super Bowl in February 2009, boosting traffic last year. In addition, snowstorms on the east coast in February led to many flight cancellations.

But March figures might provide a better snapshot of the travel season. “We'll be anxious to know what the March numbers show,” says Brenda Geoghanan, TIA's director of public information.
