Health Management Associates Inc. reported positive results for the second quarter of 2010, generating $1.25 billion in revenue over the three-month period.

The health care provider and hospital operator also posted a substantial gain in net income. The company earned $39.7 million in profits in the recently concluded quarter, up 23.1% from last year's quarterly figure.

"We are pleased with the continued successful execution of our operating strategy which has generated another quarter of outstanding financial results," said HMA CEO Gary D. Newsome.

Newsome cited effective cost controlling, operational improvements in hospital emergency rooms, and successful physician recruiting as key achievements for the quarter. (Read “Back to Life” for more information on HMA's business approach.)
