BUYER: The United Church of Marco Island Inc. (principals: Byron Farrell, Donald Mills, Norman Thomson, Pat Austin and Cheryl Axelson), Marco Island

SELLER: Thomas E. Kimbal

PROPERTY: 750 Bald Eagle Drive, Marco Island

PRICE: $1.1 million

PREVIOUS PRICE: $170,000, August 1997

LAW FIRM ON DEED: Law Office of Jamie B. Greusel, Marco Island

PLANS, DESCRIPTION: The United Church of Marco Island purchased a 5,600-square-foot multi-store retail building for $1.1 million.

The price equated to $196 per square foot.

The building is best known as the home of Kimball Floor Covering Inc., the Marco Home Decorator Center and Marco Patio & Decorating.

The nearby church plans to use the building for its Bargain Basket Thrift Shop, which currently operates from 828 Bald Eagle Drive. The thrift shop will use two store units and will share space in the building with a hair salon.

“Our lease was up at the end of September, and our landlord was looking to increase our rent,” says Jan Kelly, administrative financial assistant. “This will double or triple our space. Hopefully it will increase our traffic a little and give people more space to shop in.”

The thrift store expects to move in mid-September. It is a non-profit and all net income is applied to the church's ministry and missions.

The church mortgaged the property to the former owner, Thomas Kimbal, for $800,000.
