The Economic Development Corp. of Sarasota County used more than a quarter of a million dollars to promote hiring at MyUS.com and Tervis Tumbler Company, an offering that convinced MyUS.com to relocate.

MyUS.com, led by the Business Review's Entrepreneur of the Year for 2009 Eric Baird, will move from two Manatee County facilities to a single location in Sarasota County. In exchange, the Sarasota EDC will give the company approximately $60,000 ($1,000 per existing employee) plus $1,000 for each additional job it creates over the next five years, for an additional total of up to $165,000.

Tervis Tumbler Co., which plans to build a new 40,700-square-foot facility in Venice, will receive up to $100,000 in grant money for creating up to 214 jobs over the next three years. Laura Spencer, CEO at Tervis, says the company already plans to add 80 employees in 2010.

To receive the incentives, the Sarasota EDC requires that the new jobs be paid wages that exceed the county average, a release said.
