An unscientific online poll favors Sarasota GOP Chairman Joe Gruters — and by a wide margin — to be the next chairman of the Republican Party of Florida.

As of Dec. 20, Gruters had 296 of 392 votes cast, 76%, after six days of the poll being up on the PollDaddy.com website.

Hillsborough's GOP chairwoman, Deborah Cox-Roush was running a distant second with 68 votes, or 17%. Cox-Roush, however, may have the inside track for the post because Tampa is the host city for the Republican Party convention in 2012.

Still, some might argue that it could be a better arrangement not to have the state GOP party chairman also tied up with convention responsibilities, so that may favor other candidates like Gruters.

Bringing up the rear in the poll are former State Rep. Dave Bitner with 4%, Tony DiMatteo, a state committeeman with the Republican Party of Pinellas County (2%), and Sid Dinerstein, chairman of the Republican Party of Palm Beach County (1%).

The Florida Federation of College Republicans set up the poll, which can be viewed at polldaddy.com.
