The University of South Florida St. Petersburg plans to build a dormitory and student center on a vacant portion of its campus due to an overflow of 150 students who requested on-campus housing.
The $20 million project is on an especially tight deadline of July, 2012.
The proposed 80,000-square-foot facility, at the corner of Second Street South and Sixth Avenue South, is expected to feature a two-story student center and 196 beds. The center will include a game room, a cafeteria and a banquet hall with a large lecture area and breakout rooms.
The school has begun the bid process to find a contractor. Rowe Architects Inc. in Tampa is the designer.
“This campus has over 6,000 students and no student center,” says D. Kent Kelso, regional vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment services. “We are one of the only public institutions in the area that doesn't have one. We aren't a commuter campus anymore, but we also don't have a cafeteria for the students, who live on campus.”
