In their ongoing battle for industry validation, the executives at Sarasota-based XG Technology have a new weapon for their arsenal: Rich Tehrani, an influential blogger and entrepreneur in the world of Voice over Internet Protocol technology.

Tehrani recently wrote a column for his blog titled “xG Technology's xMax technology works as advertised.” It's a big step for xG, which is attempting to do something big cell phone companies haven't been able to do: Provide an inexpensive way to make cell phone calls over the Internet using VoIP.

The company maintains a corporate office in downtown Sarasota and a research and manufacturing lab in Fort Lauderdale. It has spent the past decade both perfecting its technology and trying to prove to a skeptical industry that the system can work.

Tehrani met with xG executives to chat about the business model and the company's challenges before testing the phone in various settings. He also probed the inner workings of the actual phone.

The result of the tests was that a lot of Tehrani's skepticism has been turned to belief. He wrote that the technology “quite possibly” could change the wireless industry.

“At least for my demo, xMax worked well and is real,” Tehrani wrote. “When you realize that this company may have found a way to take a frequency riddled with wireless garbage and turn it into a fully functioning wireless voice and data network, you start to see how much of a game changer this could be for the wireless industry.”
