The recession has caused yet another local nonprofit group to call off a fundraising event: The Junior Achievement chapter for Sarasota and Manatee counties canceled its annual Bradenton luncheon, initially scheduled for April 29.
“It was hard decision to make,” Barbara Page, the chapter's executive director, tells Coffee Talk. “But we didn't have the numbers to support an event.”
The chapter's past annual breakfasts and luncheons have been free to participants, in the hopes that the pro-capitalism and pro-entrepreneurial speakers will draw out donors and volunteers.
Colorado Springs-based Junior Achievement is an international nonprofit group that teaches financial literacy, entrepreneurialism and basic business skills to students of all ages through classroom volunteers. In addition to Sarasota and Bradenton, the organization has a chapter in the Tampa area and in the Fort Myers-Naples market.
