NAPLES — David Lawrence Center, a mental health and substance abuse treatment organization with eight locations in Collier County, has appointed Scott Burgess as its new CEO.

Previously, Burgess was executive director of Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health in Arlington Heights, Ill. He replaces David Schimmel, who has held the CEO position at David Lawrence Center since 1989.

“After an extensive national search conducted over the last six months with more than 100 qualified candidates responding, we are excited to announce that our search is finally over and Scott Burgess will be our new CEO,” says Doug Johnson, chairman of the CEO selection committee and vice chair of the board, in a statement.

David Lawrence Center has 300 employees and an operating budget of $19 million. “Scott brings with him an understanding of the challenges and demands of direct-care staff, strategic planning experience in primary care and behavioral-health integration, effective statewide advocacy efforts with the legislature, proven fundraising success, and dedication to community outreach and partner engagement,” says Johnson in the statement.

Burgess was appointed a member of the Illinois governor's task force to develop the state plan for improved mental health care that was completed and approved in early 2013.
