Country club GM retires after 20 years — replacement announced

University Park, a gated community in east Manatee County, has filled its general manager position following an extensive internal and external search. 

John Fetsick assumed the role last month as longtime General Manager Laurie Evans retired. Evans joined the community in 2001 and held several positions before being named general manager in 2007, the release states. 

Before coming to University Park in 2020, Fetsick spent the previous 15 years working for the Philadelphia Phillies. When he left, he was director of finance. 

“John has been an integral part of the long-range strategy for University Park and a key member of the management team,” says Bruce Mantia, chairman of the management committee, in a press release. “He has earned the respect of the members, residents and staff at University Park as a leader capable of continuing strong leadership in the years ahead.”

The change in leadership was announced by leaders of the University Park three-member management committee, including John Whyte, president of University Park Community Association, Jim Case, chairman of the University Park Recreation District, and Mantia.

“The Community Association and Country Club businesses are ever-changing, and only those organizations that adapt can continue to be successful,” says Mantia. “Laurie was the perfect fit for University Park, especially as the club was acquired by the residents and a major renovation of key facilities was initiated. We thank her and wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.”

University Park was established in 1991 along University Parkway in Manatee County. The community features 1,200 homes, a 27-hole golf course, tennis courts, fitness center and dining facility. 

The country club is currently going through a renovation program that will reach approximately $5 million in improvements including a $2 million renovation of dining facilities, the addition of four new pickleball courts with a potential for four more and a new croquet pitch. A $1.5 million renovation of the golf course is ongoing as well.
