Open Book, the Business Observer’s new book club, is off and running.

The second Open Book gathering will be Sept. 2 from 4 to 5 p.m. The book club gives businesspeople and members of the community a chance to come together to discuss business and leadership books.

At the Open Book virtual event Sept. 2, Kerkering, Barberio & Co. Shareholder Heather Williams will lead a discussion about the book “Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action” by Simon Sinek. Williams is a former board chairwoman of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance and a member of the Business Observer’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2018, among other roles in the community.

“Reading ‘Start with Why’ will change every aspect of your life — at least it did for me,” says Williams. “Exploring that innermost part of your being to uncover what really motivates you and how you can bring your best self to every situation helps us all to become better leaders, parents and members of this community.”

The book also offers lessons that might be especially helpful as leaders and workers navigate the coronavirus.

“During this pandemic, our lives and jobs are changing — that is the opportunity before us (and challenge),” says Williams. “To be effective during this time, I need to be focused and clear on my why. How I contribute will be different and what I do will be different in the new journey ahead of us all.”

At the virtual event, Williams will share how the book has impacted her life and work. Attendees will have a chance to share their thoughts and ask questions.

At the first Open Book event in June, Jon. F. Swift Construction Director of Marketing and Operations Emmalee Legler led a discussion of the book “Eat That Frog!” by Brian Tracy.

To attend the second Open Book gathering, there’s no requirement to have attended the first book club event. Also, reading “Start With Why” is encouraged — but not required to participate. Registration for the virtual event is free. Please sign up at BusinessObserverFL.com/book-club-event.
