If you run a business based on Florida’s Gulf Coast, you might like to know: Where does one have to go to reach the households with the highest incomes?

Turns out, all over. The region’s top three ZIP codes by median household income are spread all along the Gulf Coast, according to the latest five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Tampa’s Palma Ceia neighborhood, just south of Interstate 275 and west of Bayshore Boulevard, claims the prize for top earning ZIP code (33629), at an estimated $105,443 for the median household. With its stately houses, brick-lined streets and high-end boutiques, that makes sense.

From there it’s a 160-mile drive south to Sanibel Island, where the median household income for the ZIP code (33957) is $104,115. Then back north for the third ZIP code (34228), on Longboat Key. The median estimate on the barrier island is $102,348.

To find a cluster of high-earning ZIP codes, go back to the top spot — not only because of Palma Ceia’s residents but also those in Odessa (33556), Westchase (33626), Lutz (33548), Lithia (33547) and Bloomingdale (33596). Those Gulf Coast ZIP codes claim the No. 4 through No. 8 spots on these rankings.

Another ZIP code cluster of substantial earners lies near Longboat Key. Residents in two Lakewood Ranch ZIP codes (34202 and 34211), Manatee River (34212), University Park (34201) and Siesta Key (34242) all live in zip codes where the median household income is above $90,000.

These are lofty figures compared to national median household incomes. For the entire U.S, the estimate for median household income is $61,372 — meaning the median household in ZIP code 33629, Palma Ceia, earns 72% more than the median household nationwide on an annual basis. The comparison is even more stark for Florida, where the median household income is $50,883. That means the median household in Palma Ceia earns more than double the income of Florida’s median household.
