Nearly four out of 10, 38%, of corporate CFOs say a mismatched skill set is the top reason new hires fail, according to a recent survey from Robert Half Finance & Accounting.
The second-most cited factor in a failed hire, with 27%, is unclear performance expectations, the survey shows. Personality conflicts and a failure to fit into the company's corporate culture are other reasons that made the list.
The survey of 270 CFOs from Robert Half, an independent research firm, broke down the responses into the size of the business. The mismatched skill set answer increases with the size of the company, from 37% with 250-499 employees to 40% for 500-999 employees to 45% with mote than 1,000 employees.
“Hiring is hard enough, but it's even harder when you have to do it twice,” says Paul McDonald, senior executive director at Robert Half, in a statement. “Don't impede your efforts by recycling old job descriptions. Develop a fresh overview for each opening, listing the skills required for candidates to be successful now and in the future.”
