TAMPA — Managed care firm WellCare Health Plans named Michael Radu to the newly created position of senior vice president of clinical operations and business development.

Radu will report to WellCare CEO Ken Burdick, according to a release.

Radu most recently served as CEO of Health Essentials. He has more than 25 years experience in the managed-care industry, including with Medicaid and Medicare, medical group administration, business development, operations and state public affairs at companies, the release adds.

“This new leadership structure is designed to shore up our continuous efforts to best serve our members' needs and adds additional bench strength to our executive team,” Burdick says in a press release.

Dr. Steve Goldberg will continue to report to Burdick as senior vice president and chief medical officer and will focus on the company's clinical innovation. Tampa-based WellCare (symbol: WCG; recent price: $90.67) has about $12.95 billion in revenues last year.
