UT's Entrepreneurship Center honored

TAMPA — The University of Tampa Entrepreneurship Center in the Sykes College of Business was recently recognized by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) with its Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Program Award.

According to Tony Mendes, president of the USASBE, the excellence in entrepreneurship education awards are open to undergraduate and graduate programs. The USASBE is the largest independent, professional, academic organization in the world dedicated to advancing the discipline of entrepreneurship. It has more than 1,000 members.

The entrepreneurship major at University of Tampa is one of the largest on campus and focuses on the skills needed to be successful business owner.

The award comes just weeks after the University of Tampa announced plans to build a use the top floor of a new building it has under construction to house the Entrepreneurship Center. The space will be designed to bring together prospective student entrepreneurs, educators and experienced executives to generate, define and develop entrepreneurial concepts and to launch new ventures. The building is set for completion in spring 2015.

“UT's entrepreneurship program is unique in the close interaction between UT's entrepreneurship students and the Tampa Bay entrepreneur community,” Frank Ghannadian, dean of the Sykes College of Business, says in a press release. “This strong entrepreneurial environment contributes to economic development and startups in the region.”

The University of Tampa is scheduled to host the USASBE's annual conference next year.
