TAMPA — The Tampa Tribune announced Thursday it has promoted William R. Barker to president and publisher of the paper. Barker has been vice president of operations for the Tribune since 2004.
The paper, Tampa's oldest daily, is owned by Media General Inc., a publicly owned news company based in Richmond, Va. According to a release from the company, Barker will report to John Cottingham, president and market leader of Media General's Mid-South market.
Former Tampa Tribune publisher Denise Palmer was replaced in November. At the time, the company said it was part of a restructuring that included layoffs and changes in other top leadership positions. Terry Jamerson has been serving as interim publisher.
In February, Media General announced it is exploring the potential sale of newspaper operations to reduce its total debt outstanding. It owns 23 newspapers, 18 television stations, websites and media advertising companies, including News Channel 8 WFLA, TBO.com and DealTaker.com.
Prior to joining the Tribune in 2004, Barker was director of operations for the Richmond, Va., Times-Dispatch from 1996 to 2004. He originally joined that paper as assistant production director in 1990. Before his time with that publication, he worked for Gannett Inc. and USA Today.
