The list of the nation's top 100 retailers, as ranked by annual revenues in Chain Store Age magazine, wasn't kind to the Gulf Coast this year.

Florida didn't fare too well, either, as only four Sunshine State companies made the rankings. The lone Gulf Coast entity was HSN, the St. Petersburg-based TV and web retailer. The company, which slipped in at 100th on the list, had $2.82 billion in 2008 revenues, down slightly from $2.9 billion in 2007.

Lakeland-based grocery chain Publix, which grew its revenues from $23.2 billion in 2007 to $24.1 billion last year, ranked 15th on the list. The other Florida-based companies on the list were Delray Beach-based Office Depot, with $14.5 billion in 2008 revenues and Jacksonville-based Winn Dixie, which had $7.2 billion in 2008 revenues. Office Depot was ranked 27th on the list, while Winn Dixie came in 47th place.

Outside of HSN, which up until May 2008 was a subsidiary of New York-based IAC/InterActive Corp., the three largest retail chains on the Gulf Coast — Rooms to Go, Chico's FAS and Beall's — fell well short of Chain Store Age's top 100. None of those companies surpassed $1.7 billion in 2008 revenues.
