TAMPA -- The average annual wage in Hillsborough County in 2010 was $44,544, roughly 10% higher than the average wage in Pinellas County, which was $40,372, according to new data from Enterprise Florida.

Of Florida's six most populous counties, Hillsborough's average annual wage was second-highest, with Palm Beach County claiming the top spot at $45,004.

Pay across the bay has diverged since the beginning of the decade. In 2001, the average annual wage in Hillsborough ($32,623) was roughly 4% higher than that in Pinellas ($31,347); put another way, the pay divide has more than doubled on a percentage basis over the last nine years.

The average annual wage in Florida in 2010 was $40,555, meaning Hillsborough workers earned 9.8% more than the state average.
