Pinellas County is making it easier for entrepreneurs and businesses to relocate to a new building or site in the county with the launch of a new commercial real estate database.
Pinellas wants to reach entrepreneurs or relocating firms at the outset of their search, before they settle on a site, says Mike Meidel, economic development director for the county. Research shows that growing businesses and consultants often compile their shortlist of locations using mainly online resources, Meidel says in a release. “We want to ensure we make that shortlist.”
The new database, available at http://pced.org/realestate/ is powered by GIS Planning's ZoomProspector, an online program that uses mapping technology to simplify the search process. Along with maps, it provides demographic data and labor force information. Map overlays on the site show whether a property lies within a brownfield, enterprise zone or hub, and whether it is located near rail lines or airports.
For example, if you were looking to open a little cafe on Treasure Island, you could learn on the database that among its population of 6,705, the median household income is $51,000. So residents might be able to afford a few dollars for a cappuccino. But with a job growth rate of -24% for the area, perhaps some folks would also have time to dawdle over coffee.
