After years of being overshadowed by newer and bigger movie theaters in other parts of the Gulf Coast, the Brandon and Riverview area of Hillsborough County is once again becoming a cinematic star.

Xscape Theatres is set to build a 14-screen theater near the intersection of Interstate 75 and Progress Boulevard, where the Indiana-based company says it will create an “entertainment destination.” The Xscape parcel is part of a 100-acre planned development in Riverview that includes the construction of 1,200 multifamily units since 2003.

The 60,000-square-foot theater will be built on 12.1 acres near the burgeoning retail corridor of Bloomingdale Avenue in south Hillsborough. It will cost $15 million, and could possibly create 50 jobs.

Two super auditoriums will feature 70-foot wall-to-wall screens with 4K digital projection, and Dolby Atmos surround sound. All theaters will have electric reclining leather seats, and will join 30 other Xscape Theatres locations in 12 states.

The theater isn't far from AMC Regency 20 on Brandon Boulevard, one of the region's first stadium-seating theaters that opened in 1986 with eight screens. AMC remodeled the theater in 2013, and it now features leather seats, a bar area and reserved seats in all auditoriums.
