Is it too early for a Michael Jackson tribute coin? We're about to find out, courtesy of St. Petersburg-based TV and Web retailer HSN. The network debuts a line of commemorative coins as part of special programming that runs from 2 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, coinciding with what would have been the singer's 51st birthday.
The coin sets feature a 5 Decades Coin Collection ($29.95), with five different-aged pictures of Jackson on the quarters; the 4-piece Colorized Commemorative Coin Set (24.95) with the pop star on various coins on a Half dollar and Michigan and Indiana quarters; and the Michael Jackson Silver Eagle Dollar Coin Collection ($59.95) with a "military uniform" Jackson colorized onto a 2009 silver eagle dollar along with automatic shipping of future silver dollar Jackson coins.
This is likely just part of the first wave of post-death merchandising for the King of Pop, with dead-celebrity singers continuing to generate big business both for their estates and others. Forbes, which publishes an annual ranking of Top Earning Dead Celebrities, ranked three singers in its 2008 top 13 ranking: (1) Elvis Presley with $52 million in 2007, (7) John Lennon with $9 million (13) Marvin Gaye with $3.5 million.
