Despite posting a companywide $10.7 million net loss, Richmond-based Media General Inc. announced today that its business operations in Florida were profitable to the tune of $2.1 million.
Revenues from Florida operations in the recently concluded quarter grew 6.7% over the year, while profits quadrupled from the $524,000 earned in 2009.
Political advertising and oil-spill related spending from BP boosted broadcast revenues by 35% over the year, the company said, with this year's election season bringing in $5 million. Digital revenues grew as well, up 10.8% from a year ago.
Still, publishing revenues fell 10.4%, with drops of 18% and 2.5%, respectively, in classifieds and local spending.
Media General owns the Tampa Tribune, WFLA-News Channel 8, and TBO.com.
